The Virginia Mlakar Enrichment Fund was created by her daughter Debbie in memory, and in honor of, her mother’s love for teaching to offer unique “enrichment” experiences in and out of the classroom. Virginia Mlakar was an elementary and middle school teacher for 37 years and a dedicated member of Lake County Retired Teachers Association (LCRTA).
LCRTA provides scholarship opportunities for pubic high school students in Lake County along with volunteering in the community and supporting charitable organizations through donations, according to a release from the group.
The Virginia Mlakar Enrichment Fund provides money for kindergarten through 12th grade public school teachers in Lake County for two types of “enrichment” activities: classroom (scheduling speakers, such as artists, scientists and musicians and purchasing materials such as books, art media and technical devices) and for field trips (to help cover bus and special van transportation to museums, lectures, events, etc.)
The process is simple for teachers – first obtain a Fund proposal application available through their principal in the fall or on the LCRTA website at lakecountyrta.weebly.com. The deadline to submit completed applications is Feb. 1, with the Committee’s review to follow, the release stated.
Award money up to $500 per application may be granted (on March 1), with the project needing to be implemented by Dec. 31. In June, award recipients will be invited to attend LCRTA’s “Presentation of Awards” Meeting to explain their project and how it has impacted their students, according to the release.
Applications can be mailed to Debbie Ludvik, 5792 A Ridgeview Lane, Willoughby, OH 44094 or emailed (attached PDF format) to [email protected]. For more information, Ludvik may be contacted at (440) 221-7351.
