BENSONHURST — THE WENJIAN LIU FOUNDATION received a check from City Councilmember Susan Zhuang during its recent Annual Awards Dinner and Fundraiser to help families of first-responders who died in the line of duty. The foundation is named in memory of NYPD Detective Wenjian Liu who, along with his patrol car partner Rafael Ramos, was shot and killed in the line of duty on Dec. 20, 2014.

Zhuang presented a $10,000 check to aid the foundation’s mission of providing comfort through the training and donation of therapy dogs to the families of first responders to help alleviate the pain of losing their loved one. Zhuang, who in her role as civic leader and aide to an elected official has worked with the Liu family since the tragedy, explained that Liu’s widow had lost the will to live until a friend suggested she get a therapy dog. Still a newlywed at the time of his death, Mrs. Liu adopted a black Labrador retriever that she named Liu Zai in honor of Wenjian. Now six years old, Liu Zai has brought her joy and companionship. As a testament to the experience of having a therapy dog, Mrs. Liu started the foundation.

Councilmember Zhuang was also instrumental earlier this year in the renaming of P.S. 331 in Dyker Heights as the Detective Wenjian Liu School of Civics and Entrepreneurship in honor of his heroics and sacrifice.
