GENEVA COUNTY, Ala (WDHN) — A Geneva County timber bridge that burned almost two months ago in what is believed to be an arson will be replaced using state funds.
On Thursday, Governor Kay Ivey’s office announced Geneva County would receive a $338,713 grant from the Rebuild Alabama Act to replace a timber bridge over Adam Creek on L Vaughn Road.
The bridge was destroyed in early May after an alleged arson.
After the fire, Geneva County Road and Bridge officials applied for a $300,000 state grant to replace the wooden bridge with pre-cast concrete and steel.
Construction on the new bridge is expected to begin in the fall.
Before the state awarded the grant, Geneva County Road and Bridge officials feared the funds would be pulled from other departments due to the county not having enough money set aside.
Sheriff Tony Helms tells WDHN that despite a $1,000 reward, investigators have received no tips or leads on a suspect in the arson.
A total of $3.9 million was awarded to several Alabama counties and cities for road and bridge work.
Covington County received $525,880 for paving and drainage improvements on Gum Street and Fir Street.
