The Glenwood Baseball-Softball Club (GBSC) is raising funds for its Chris Abbott Scholarship fund by selling t-shirts.The shirts come in long sleeves, short sleeves, or a hoodie. They have “165”, Abbott’s badge number, on them.50 percent of the proceeds will go into the scholarship fund which was created a year ago to honor Abbott.”If they want to go beyond high school in their education we want to help provide that opportunity,” Shawn Koehler, the club’s President, said.Seniors in high school who have gone through GBSC will be able to apply for the scholarship. The club decided to put it in Abbott’s name for all he did for the community and the club.The Bellevue police officer died in November after a medical emergency. He is remembered as a loving father, caring friend, devoted husband and dedicated volunteer.At the Glenwood Community Recreation Complex Abbott helped raise the money for, and construct, a concession stand with two restrooms inside. He also helped put a new fence around the softball diamond and build dugouts. “It’s easy to look at something as, ‘he did this structurally’ but he made a lot of kids feel really good playing sports with their friends and that’s where Chris meant a lot for us,” Koehler said.For board member Liz Jensen the scholarship means Abbott’s name will be brought up forever.”I just like the fact that his name will continue to be brought up,” Jensen said. “I think that’s important because he needs to be remembered because he was such a great guy and did so much for other people.”Follow this link to get a t-shirt.Read KETV’s earlier coverage on Chris Abbott here.
