Simmons & Simmons has expanded its funds practice in Hong Kong with the hiring of Jeffrey Friedenberg from US-based global alternative investment firm Angelo Gordon as head of private funds.
“Jeffrey’s extensive experience in the asset management and investment funds sector is a significant addition to our team,” said Eva Chan, head of the UK firm’s Hong Kong office. “His deep understanding of the complexities of fund formation, capital raising and regulatory compliance will be invaluable as we continue to expand our presence in the Asia-Pacific and the greater China region,” Chan added.
Friedenberg was most recently a partner, managing director and head of legal and compliance for Europe and Asia at Angelo Gordon, where he worked for more than 11 years. The Hong Kong-based lawyer’s move to Simmons & Simmons also comes less than a year after the UK firm had added Latham & Watkins’ long-term energy partner David Blumental as Hong Kong-based head of its energy and infrastructure practice in Asia.
Friedenberg has more than 20 years of experience in the asset management and investments funds sector, with his practice including advising private fund managers on fund formation, capital raising, fund regulatory and compliance, among others.
From 1999 to 2001, Friedenberg had practised as a corporate associate at Latham & Watkins and Kirkland & Ellis. He moved to the in-house sector in 2002 by joining US-based private equity firm Pathway Capital Management as an assistant general counsel, and later spent a year as a legal and compliance consultant at Blackstone before his move to Angelo Gordon in 2012.
