CHARLESTON, WV (WOWK) – They may be small, but these yachts are mighty, and part of an event in Charleston that helped some businesses beat the heat.

The ninth annual Kiwanis Corporate Regatta took place Monday at the Kanawha County Public Library’s main branch in downtown Charleston. Companies can buy the “yachts” and then the skipper sets sail with the help of a super-soaker.

Monday’s event raised more than $13,000 – the most they’ve ever raised. This money will go toward benefiting Mary C. Snow West Side Elementary School’s reading program, the KCPL’s summer reading program, and the Kiwanis Club’s Christmas shopping program, and more.

“They’re the future. I mean, the better the kids learn, and the better/more help they get now, the better they will be when the grow up, and just gives them a great chance to succeed,” said Chad Parker, Kiwanis Club President – West Charleston.

Gaddy Engineering took the top spot in this year’s event, and our own 13 News Anchor Amanda Barren served as the event’s emcee.
