Local legislators secure funds to repair Brown County State Park Horsemen’s Camp

The State Budget Committee approved funding Wednesday for repairs to the Horsemen’s Camp at Brown County State Park.

The camp sustained “devastating” damage during a tornado on May 16, according to a news release from Sen. Eric Koch of Bedford and Rep. Dave Hall of Norman.

Other damage included uprooted trees, damaged roads, vehicles and riding paths, worsened by heavy machinery during cleanup efforts.

Koch and Hall worked with the Indiana Department of Natural Resources to find unused repair and rehabilitation funds for the camp. The funds came from the McCormick’s Creek tornado damage fund, which originally contained $5 million.

The State Budget Committee reallocated the funds, acknowledging the camp is a vital asset to locals and visitors, contributing more than $320,000 annually.

There is no word yet on when repairs will start, but Hall said he is hopeful the process will begin soon.

“This funding is a big win for our community and for everyone who enjoys the outdoors,” Hall said. “Horsemen’s Camp is a unique part of Brown County, and getting it repaired quickly means welcoming back folks who love to ride and camp here. I’m grateful to the State Budget Committee for helping make this possible.”

Koch represents Senate District 44, which includes Brown, Jackson, Lawrence and Orange counties, and portions of Monroe County, while Hall represents House District 62, which includes all of Brown County and portions of Monroe and Jackson counties.
