Local teen organizes art showcase to raise funds for Palestine

SALISBURY, Md. – Sometimes, when you want to help but just don’t know how, art can be the answer.

At least, it was for 13-year-old Mariam Mohamed, who used it as an outlet.

“Art has always been something that I both enjoy and have some talent in, so when I heard what was happening to our brothers and sisters in Palestine, I could see that art was a way that I could help,” Mohamed said.

Back in late March, the young artist had an idea to host an art showcase to raise money for Palestinians, amid the Israel-Hamas war.

Irshana Nawfer described watching her daughter use her talents to help those in need, as a proud mom moment.

“I think she was using art as a way of expressing her feelings and sympathy, and then she thought, ‘Why not do it in our community? To bring more people together,” Nawfer said.

And it’s because of their faith that Nawfer said Delmarva’s Muslim community is so drawn to the cause.

“Muslims are like one body; the whole Ummah is like one body, so when one part of our body is hurt, our whole body is hurt,” Nawfer said. “We all have to be together to help each other to move forward.”
