BISMARCK, N.D. (KVRR) — A bill that would have prevented state funds from supporting Prairie Public broadcasting has been defeated in the senate on a vote of 6-41.

In a social media post, Prairie Public wrote, “We’re deeply grateful to everyone who submitted testimony and contacted your senators and representatives – your voice truly made a difference!”.

While it is a win for the pubic broadcaster, it still needs its funding restored in the biennial budget.

The funding was removed when the House passed the bill earlier in the session.

Republican Rep. Vicky Steiner of Dickinson voted in favor of the funding cut pointing to what she calls a one-sided view of the abortion issue by the public broadcaster.

Prairie Public received nearly $1.5 million from the state in fiscal year 2023, which was less than 10% of its revenue.
