The Pentagon has uncovered $8 billion in untapped funds from last fiscal year to cover pay for military personnel amid the ongoing federal shutdown.
President Trump said Saturday he had directed Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth to find money to pay service members, who will get their first paychecks Oct. 15 since the shutdown began. Other federal workers are furloughed but won’t get their back pay until the shutdown ends.
A Pentagon spokesperson said it has “identified approximately $8 billion of unobligated research development testing and evaluation funds (RDTE) from the prior fiscal year that will be used to issue mid month paychecks to service members in the event the funding lapse continues past October 15th.”
