RED BANK, Tenn. — The City of Red Bank says federal funding is letting them tackle ongoing stormwater issues at White Oak Park.
Until now, the city says resources have been limited when it comes to caring for the park’s stormwater system.
This new project will enhance stormwater management, helping to prevent future flooding.
“The vibe at this park is amazing. If you like social interaction, this is definitely a dog park where you can get that at.”
Red Bank officials tell us that for more than 20 years, there’s been limited resources for the maintenance of White Oak Park.
While residents say they enjoy the park, some say there are places where they’ve noticed those shortcomings.
Juliann Crawford says build up of sediment and debris in the park’s storm drains and pond have led to an unpleasant smell.
“You don’t really smell it until you get close. So we come all the way from the top of the hill. Once you’re past it, you don’t even smell it, so it’s just what they’ve dug up so far, but you’re next to it where you can smell it.”
With more than $1.6 million in TDEC grant funding, the City of Red Bank says this construction work is the final step in restoring White Oak Park to its former glory.
City officials say while it may just look like mud and gravel right now, park goers can expect better scenery and improved water quality once the project is completed.
Of that 1.6 million, $204,000 is going toward the restoration of the park’s 2 retention ponds.
The goal of this project? To address critical infrastructure needs in the stormwater utility system “by removing sediment and debris and improving water quality.”
Something Crawford is looking forward to.
“Since we’ve been here, there have been so many changes. You know, they’re fixing the pedestrian bridge. I mean, it’s been great. It’s nice to be in a city where they really take pride in in the community.”
Estimated to be completed in December, city officials say the changes will allow for easier mowing access and for continued maintenance.
“I understand that they’re doing it in phases, so it takes time, but I like that they’re doing it.”
The playground at White Oak Park was renovated in the summer of 2024.
