Rep. Sewell announces funds for city of Tuscaloosa’s Mental Health Court initiative

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WIAT) — The city of Tuscaloosa is receiving a hefty sum of funding for a new initiative geared toward mental health.

On Thursday, U.S. Rep. Terri Sewell was joined by Mayor Walt Maddox, Tuscaloosa city councilors and a representative of the Tuscaloosa Police Department to announce $259,810 in funding from the U.S. Department of Justice.

The funding will be used to design and implement the city’s Mental Health Court Initiative, which will provide new services for adults with mental disabilities or illnesses and reduce involvement with the criminal justice system.
