Report: Liberty County sheriff won’t control funds from speed-camera violations

HINESVILLE, Ga. (WSAV) – The Liberty County Board of Commissioners will decide how to use over $1 million in funding from those caught on camera in speed zones.

This comes after a 4-2 vote by the board to take control of the money from Liberty County Sheriff Will Bowman.

The Current reports that Bowman spent most of the $1.3 million on law enforcement expenses, but also donated tens of thousands of dollars for various youth activities.

Now that commissioners are in control, each time he wants to spend money from the account, Bowman will have to make a request and have it approved.

The agreement, The Current reports, does allow the sheriff to give up to 20% of the funds to public safety initiatives within the Liberty County School System.

Bowman told The Current he hasn’t read the July 2 draft agreement. It’s uncertain whether he’ll take the matter to court.

It’s also unclear whether the sheriff broke any county regulations or state laws in his spending of the funds, The Current added.
