Del Norte Sheriff Garrett Scott updated the public on the major drug bust asset forfeiture funds seizure in February, 2023.
Scott reported the canine-assisted bust on 101, 18 months ago by the DNSD totaled $375,000 in cash. Per State law, the seized booty was divided, accordingly:
• 24 percent ($90,000 allocated to the General Fund, State of California
• 10 percent ($37,500) directed to the Prosecuting agency: The Del Norte District Attorney.
• 15 percent ($56,250) given to a Special Fund to combat drug abuse and divert gang activity.
• 1 percent ($3,750) Environmental Enforcement / Training, State of California.
• 50 percent ($187,500) was directed to the Del Norte Sheriff’s Department.
Here’s the latest Accounting of the Sheriff’s $187,500 funding:
• Commercial Incinerator ($7500)
• Canine Vehicle ($85,000)
• UTV vehicle ($40,000)
• Trailer ($25,000) match for Office of Emergency Services funds)
• Not committed ($30,000)… Balance remaining in the account.
Sheriff Scott is mandated to spend the seized funds in very specific and narrow parameters.
Funds may not be used for salary enhancements.
