Sherrill seeks additional $2.4 million in matching funds

Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D-Montclair) has submitted another $1.2 million raised to the New Jersey Election Law Enforcement Commission in a bid to receive an additional $2.4 million in matching funds under the state’s gubernatorial public financing program.

This is Sherrill’s second application for matching funds; she received $1,435,481 on January 30.

If her full application is approved, Sherrill would receive roughly $3.8 million; the public financing cap is $5.4 million.

“The momentum for Mikie across New Jersey is growing and we’re encouraged by the outpouring of support we’re seeing from rank-and-file Democrats, grassroots organizations, and donors who are pitching in to support a different kind of leadership to Trenton,” said Alex Ball, Sherrill’s campaign manager.  “Mikie’s message is resonating with voters, and we’re building the coalition it takes to win and protect New Jersey from Trump’s dangerous agenda.”

Former Gov. Jon Corzine hosted a fundraiser for Sherrill on Monday evening that brought in about $150,000; with matching funds, that event is worth approximately $450,000; some of the money raised at the Corzine event is included in the $1.2 million match submission.  Among those in attendance: Orin Kramer, once one of the most potent Democratic fundraisers in New Jersey, and New York City power couple Victor and Sarah Kovner.

Three other Democrats have received matching funds: Rep. Josh Gottheimer (D-Tenafly), $3,268,572; former Senate President Steve Sweeney, $3,242,743; and Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop, $2,466,523.
