The Shenango and Neshannock High softball squads competed on the field Wednesday, but teamed up off the diamond for a fundraising event.
Organized by Shenango junior Cadence Christopher, the aim was to raise money for a family with ties to both communities. That’s Dom and Mandy Joseph, whose 5-year-old daughter, Declyn, was born with microcephaly, a condition that results in the head being smaller than expected, inhibiting brain development.
Declyn attends the Western Pennsylvania School for Blind Children in Pittsburgh, a facility ““fully dedicated to educating students with complex multiple disabilities in addition to blindness,” according to its website. Funds raised at Wednesday’s game were designated for the school as well as Declyn’s Dream, which will create a playground to accommodate children with physical, functional and intellectual disabilities at Shenango Township’s Municipal Park.
