Tough decisions will be made this Wednesday as the City of Susanville grapples with how to spend its remaining ARPA funds. Over $3 million in projects are still awaiting approval, but the city only has around $1.4 million left.
The city was given 2.65 million during the pandemic for economic recovery. Over the years, a decision was made—just in the past few months—to spend 1.2 million on needed city infrastructure repairs, a marketing campaign, and the city’s general plan update.
At the city council meeting this week, the council will have to decide between several projects.
The city fire department has identified the need to replace fire engine #621, which is frequently used for emergency responses but currently faces significant mechanical issues. Plans are in place to procure a new engine to ensure reliable service.
The Susanville Elks Lodge has requested $150,000 for building repairs, supported by a detailed business proposal outlining projected revenues and expenditures. Similarly, the Susanville Performing Arts Center Group seeks approximately $970,000 to acquire and convert the Sierra Movie Theatre into a performing arts center, accompanied by a comprehensive business plan.
The Lassen County Historical Museum has proposed constructing a 2300 square foot storage facility behind the museum at an estimated cost of $340,000 to store their collection.
Additionally, the city has prepared an estimated $88,000 for installing a vault-type bathroom at the Little League field, as the facilities are plagued by frequent vandalism.
Lastly, $250,000 from ARPA funds is proposed for code enforcement abatement to address property compliance issues.
Debt repayment is also part of the City Council’s discussion.
