Torn Space Theater plans upgrades after receiving $400,000 in funds

The funds will be used to connect two buildings to form one theater with expanded seating and upgraded electric, data, and lighting infrastructure.

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Congressman Kennedy announced Wednesday that $400,000 of funds will go towards the Torn Space Theater, housed in the Adam Mickiewicz Library and Dramatic Circle in Buffalo.

The funds will be used to connect the two buildings at 608 and 612 Fillmore to form one theater with expanded seating and upgraded electric, data, and lighting infrastructure, according to a news release.

“The completion of this phase of construction ensures that we will be able to produce and present the very best in contemporary performance while transforming the outdoor grounds into a digital media performance space.” said Dan Shanahan, founder and Artistic Director of Torn Space Theater.

In addition to upgrading the indoor theater, funds will also be used to create an outdoor cultural space. The goal of the new space is to host art, theatrical, and musical performances and festivals. This venue will include a hospitality station, permanent signage and permanent landscaping.

Congressman Kennedy was able to secure these funds through his efforts to support underserved communities and provide resources.

“This funding will support Torn Space Theater’s efforts to reach an even greater audience with its innovative and world-class theater,” said Congressman Kennedy. “From expanding the facility’s footprint to transforming the grounds into an outdoor venue, this project will help revitalize nearby neighborhoods and expand programming for theater-goers in our region.”

According to their website, the Torn Space Theater “aims to create original, aesthetically innovative performances; to introduce internationally-renowned, contemporary performance to Western New York.”

Their past projects have a huge variety, ranging from audio experiences, video showcases, to live performances.
