The Trump administration has frozen over $1 billion in federal funds to Cornell University and $790 million to Northwestern University, citing ongoing civil rights investigations at both schools. A Trump administration official told Fox News that the funds were paused “in connection with several ongoing, credible, and concerning Title VI investigations.”

The freeze primarily affects grants and contracts with the departments of Agriculture, Defense, Education, and Health and Human Services, according to two administration officials who spoke with the New York Times.

A Northwestern University spokesperson told The Daily, the university’s newspaper, that the school has not received official notification about the cut and were “informed by members of the media.” They added that NU’s “innovative and lifesaving research” is now at risk. “The University has fully cooperated with investigations by both the Department of Education and Congress,” the spokesperson said.

This move marks the latest action by the Trump administration to withhold funding from prestigious Ivy League institutions for noncompliance with anti-discrimination laws, signaling a continued crackdown on what the administration views as violations of civil rights protections. The administration has suspended or canceled more than $3.3 billion in federal funds to Brown, Columbia, Harvard, Penn and Princeton.
