Berenberg Identifies Top UK Sustainability Investment Themes for 2025

Berenberg has highlighted key sustainability trends shaping the UK market in 2025, focusing on water management, energy pragmatism, and building innovation. Despite political uncertainty and weakened business confidence, the bank sees renewed investment opportunities driven by new government policies.

The UK’s energy sector remains volatile, with £68 billion invested in grid upgrades. However, reliance on gas for market stability persists. SSE (LON:SSE) is Berenberg’s top pick in this sector. Water utilities are also under pressure to address sewage pollution, with Ofwat mandating a £104 billion infrastructure upgrade. Genuit Group PLC (LON:GENG) stands out as a key beneficiary.

Climate adaptation is another priority, especially as the UK faces increased flooding risks. Companies like Marshalls PLC (LON:MSLH), Genuit, and Ashtead (LON:AHT) are well-positioned to tackle these challenges.

The report also explores broader sustainability themes, including potential UK-EU carbon tariff alignment, stricter building regulations, and reduced reliance on ultra-processed foods. Companies like Spire Healthcare Group (LON:SPI), Treatt PLC (LON:TET), and Morgan Sindall Group (LON:MGNS) are set to benefit.

Additionally, the UK’s push for producers to cover waste management costs in online retail favors Currys PLC (LON:CURY). Meanwhile, sustainability data and AI remain lower priorities as the UK follows the US in prioritizing economic growth over green technology.

While the Sustainability Disclosure Requirements (SDR) framework aims to guide transition investments, bureaucratic delays hinder its effectiveness. Despite challenges, Berenberg sees strong sustainability-driven investment opportunities in the UK market.
