Kroger’s $1.25M investment unites members of West Louisville

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WAVE) – Kroger hopes to turn years of losses at one of their Louisville locations into positive change. They are investing $1.2 million into their store at 2710 W.  Broadway.

“We have to work on keeping our check lanes shorter, so folks don’t have to wait in line,” said Shane Smith, Kroger District Manager, “keep our parking lot cleaner.”

Out of 15 Kroger stores from Louisville to Southern Indiana, Smith has heard an a lot about the West Broadway location.

“I spend more time supporting this store than any other in my district,” Smith said.

Smith realized changing what’s been happening at the West Broadway store may need a new approach. That’s why Smith joined the Bishop’s Table, a diverse group of concerned citizens, councilman, judges, law enforcement officials working together to talk through problems and find solutions.

“I don’t feel like I am out of my comfort zone here because Bishop [Dennis] Lyons and the community here were so welcoming, Smith said. “I couldn’t be more grateful than the open arms them.”

So, what’s next? Kroger is not only investing $1.2 million into the West Louisville location, but is also investing $500,000 into its employees. The starting pay will be increased to $14.70 an hour for courtesy clerks and a little more than $25 an hour for department leaders.

“The Middletown Kroger is our busiest store out of all of Louisville and now the Broadway store leadership team will be making the same amount as those at Middletown,” Smith said.

Smith divides his time between other locations, so the familiar face at the West Louisville location is already excited about what’s to come.

“There’s always an opportunity to be better every day,” said Byram Muteshi, the West Broadway store manager. “So, you agree with me, right? And we are going to do it together.”

People can expect to see the changes at the West Broadway location within the next year.
