Oakwood Theme Park once branded ‘worst rated’ to close after nearly 40 years | UK | News

The largest theme park in Wales, Oakwood Theme Park, which operated for nearly 40 years, is to close. A drop in visitor numbers means keeping it going would be “unsustainable”, the venue’s owner says. The park nearly closed in 2008, but a £25million investment saved it. “All possible avenues have been explored to avoid the closure,” Aspro Park said, “and we fully recognise the impact of the closure on the local community and the loss that will be felt as a result.”

“Unrelenting economic challenges” as a result of electricity costs, ride parts and food and drink inflation also contributed towards the decision, bosses added. Rachel Reeves’ planned increase to employers’ National Insurance payments also played a role in the move.

Oakwood Theme Park was once branded the “worst rated” in the UK by YouTube giants The Sidemen. In a video, the crew compared two amusement attractions for a budget vs luxury style challenge.  One half of the group travelled four hours to Pembrokeshire as the designated “bad team”, and spent the day sampling some of the park’s offerings.

Aspro Park added: “Unfortunately, we could no longer see a sustainable way forward and will seek to improve our other parks using the assets and where possible team elsewhere.”

The firm added that it felt “sadness” for the loss of “a rite of passage for many young visitors”.

The closure is “deeply sad”, Samuel Kurtz, Senedd Member for Carmarthen West and South Pembrokeshire, said.

He added the venue had a “special place in the hearts of many”.

The park’s website says Oakwood Theme Park “has thrills for all”, “whether it’s an adrenaline-fuelled experience or a magical adventure”.

It was closed over the winter period.

A notice read: “Oakwood is now closed for the winter period as we prepare for an exciting 2025 season! We want to thank everyone who visited us this year – it’s been a fantastic season of thrills, fun, and unforgettable memories.

“Our team is busy behind the scenes, maintaining the park, preparing for events, and ensuring everything is ready for another amazing year. We can’t wait to welcome you back!”
