Saskatchewan is sending a trade delegation to Southeast Asia this month as part of an effort to diversify its export markets.
Trade and Export Development Minister Warren Kaeding will lead the mission to Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand from Sept. 20 to 28. The focus will be on strengthening trade relationships in agriculture, mining and energy.
“Thanks to the hard work of our labour force and producers, Saskatchewan has some of the best products in the world, and we are dedicated to helping them reach new markets,” Kaeding said. “Now more than ever, diversifying our markets is critical. International missions like this one allow us to connect Saskatchewan businesses, investors, and other organizations with partners that help them grow. The more investment that comes into this province, the more resources we have to deliver the services and programs that Saskatchewan people count on.”
During the trip, Kaeding will attend the Canada-ASEAN Business Forum in Kuala Lumpur, where he is scheduled to deliver a keynote address on agriculture and food security. The forum will also bring together leaders from across the region to discuss trade and investment priorities, including energy transition, agriculture and infrastructure.
Asia continues to be a key destination for Saskatchewan exports. In 2024, shipments to the continent exceeded $10 billion. That included $868.9 million in exports to Indonesia, $285.7 million to Malaysia and $128.6 million to Thailand.
The province currently operates five trade and investment offices in Asia. Officials say the region provides opportunities to offset global challenges such as tariffs and regulatory trade barriers.
