Navajo Nation president denies allegations of taking money, says redirecting funds needed to be done

The president of the Navajo Nation is facing allegations of taking money from a critical program to the tune of more than a quarter million dollars.

WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. – The president of the Navajo Nation is facing allegations of taking money from a critical program to the tune of more than a quarter million dollars.

President Buu Nygren is accused of using that money for his own personal travel. Nygren released a statement, claiming the statement made by the Navajo Nation Council is “false.”

He did admit to redirecting funds from Missing Persons Services. But, he says, it needs to be done in order to keep the highest executive office of the Navajo Nation functioning.

He also says he “could have fully cut council’s budget,” but decided against that because he wanted to “lead by example.”

Additionally, Nygren says “it’s time to stop playing games, and stop trying to create division. Our people deserve better than political theater.”
