COAHOMA, Texas (KOSA) – Coahoma ISD trustees have voted to move forward with an independent investigation into the district’s finances.
The vote came after hearing from the community during Tuesday night’s meeting. A majority supported an independent review, but not without concerns.
“I believe the best thing this board can do is bring in a qualified outside entity with no affiliation or connection to anyone involved and let the records speak for themselves,” said Vanessa King, a concerned community member.
The complaint stems from a formal filing by a community member, alleging $3.3 million in state funding reversals, questionable vendor payments, and possible errors in staff records. None of these allegations have been independently verified.
During Tuesday’s meeting, some residents raised their own questions concerning the cost of the investigation, how independent the auditor would actually be, and whether community members or their children could face retaliation for speaking out.
“I personally know numerous parents who have concerns, questions, but will not attend the meetings or speak publicly because they are afraid there will be consequences for their children that go here,” said Megan Belcher, a concerned community member.
The board then went into executive session to consult with its attorneys. When trustees returned, a majority of 5 votes were cast to approve hiring the Underwood Law Firm to review the district’s financial and personnel records.
Once the investigation is complete, the community member who originally raised concerns will have the opportunity to present their concerns directly to the board. Trustees will then decide if any of the claims are supported.
