Morimoto at Mondrian Bordeaux launches a 33-euro lunch served in 45 minutes

Masaharu Morimoto’s sole European table has just introduced a daily rendezvous. Since 1 September 2026, the Japanese chef’s restaurant located at Mondrian Bordeaux Les Carmes has been offering “Le Lunch by Morimoto”, a complete lunch menu priced at 33 euros and served in forty-five minutes, between 12:15 pm and 1:45 pm. Two starters, rice, sushi of the day, a main course and a coffee. The establishment is taking the opportunity to revamp its entire midday menu. Here is what the formula includes, what the à la carte dishes are like, and why this address matters in Bordeaux.

What Le Lunch by Morimoto includes

The promise is twofold: a complete lunch and strict adherence to a time limit. For 33 euros, the formula features two starters, a miso soup and a cabbage salad, a choice of plain or seasoned rice, the sushi of the day, a dish of the day and a coffee, all served in forty-five minutes. The timeframe is tight, from 12:15 pm to 1:45 pm, which corresponds precisely to the lunch break of a local professional. This is a rare positioning for a table of this calibre, where the midday menu often exceeds fifty euros.

A revamped midday menu, designed for sharing

Beyond the formula, the establishment has overhauled its daytime offering, available from 12:15 pm to 7:30 pm, around a core principle it champions: the art of sharing. It features the chef’s signature dishes, pork or vegetarian gyoza, fish carpaccio with yuzu, panko-breaded Iberico pork tonkatsu, and miso-marinated roasted salmon. Vegetable and tofu fried rice plays the role of the complete vegetarian main course, priced at 24 euros. On the sushi side, the menu lists sashimi and nigiri by the piece, from salmon at €4.50 to o-toro at €9.50, alongside eight six-piece rolls, ranging from vegetable futomaki at 14 euros to spicy tuna uramaki at 20 euros. A lighter section, small cravings, adds edamame, salads and wraps priced between 8 and 24 euros.

Masaharu Morimoto, and why Bordeaux

The chef became known far beyond Japan thanks to the show Iron Chef, before building a network of restaurants in New York, Las Vegas, Tokyo and Doha. His cuisine blends Japanese technique with Western influences, focusing on a sharing format rather than a tasting menu. Bordeaux is his only European location, a choice that remains surprising compared to Paris or London, and which is explained by the hotel project hosting it. For the establishment, the midday formula serves a simple logic: a gourmet hotel dining room fills up in the evening and remains empty at lunchtime unless it attracts local clientele.

Mondrian Bordeaux Les Carmes, the hotel that houses it

The address opened on 14 November 2023 in Les Chartrons, the former wine merchants’ district, at 81 cours du Médoc. It occupies a 19th-century building, the former Calvet wine cellar, restored by Philippe Starck alongside architect Jean-François Le Gal from the Advento agency, as part of a project led with the Pichet group and Ennismore, owner of the Mondrian brand. The hotel features 97 rooms and suites ranging from 25 to 52 square metres spread over three levels, a spa, two meeting spaces and an outdoor terrace of approximately 200 square metres. Our perspective

Thirty-three euros for a complete lunch by a chef of this renown is aggressive, and that is precisely the point of the operation. Almost all gourmet hotel dining rooms suffer from the same affliction: a full room in the evening and a deserted one at lunchtime, lacking an offer calibrated for someone with only an hour to spare. The forty-five-minute constraint is the primary selling point here, even more than the price, because it turns a destination restaurant into a weekday habit. Our reservation lies with the format: the sushi of the day and the dish of the day are not detailed in advance, which requires putting trust in the establishment. For a first try, we instead recommend the à la carte menu and its yuzu fish carpaccio, the signature dish that best expresses what this chef does.
