HANOVER, N.H. (WCAX) – A weekend 5k in the Upper Valley aims to raise funds and awareness for diabetes.
The second annual Dartmouth Diabetes Dash is taking place Saturday morning. Registration begins at 10 a.m. in front of the Life Science Center.
The event is organized by the Dartmouth Diabetes Initiative, which was founded by two current students. They are working at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center to establish a fund to support local diabetes-focused projects.
“We saw the Chad hero and the prouty, and we saw the tremendous impact they have had on the local community. We felt that, we both have type 1 diabetes, we could do a similar event for diabetics to raise awareness about the chronic disease and to help raise funds for the endocrinology department,” said Dartmouth sophomore Kyriakos Papasavas.
Roughly 80 people attended last year’s event despite the rainy weather, raising close to $11,000. This weekend’s forecast is looking much better.
It’s estimated that one in ten people in New Hampshire has diabetes.
