Iran and the open market exchange rate of the dollar

Tehran, Iran – Foreign currency exchange rates in Iran’s open market continued their sharp upward trend, reaching unprecedented record highs on Saturday, September 5, 2026. The US dollar surpassed 225,000 tomans in spot market trading. Data from trading platforms and market monitoring sites such as TGJU and Bonbast showed the dollar selling price ranging between 223,000 and 227,000 tomans. Other major currencies also recorded high levels. The euro reached approximately 261,440 tomans, the British pound 305,760 tomans, and the UAE dirham 61,760 tomans.

The surge wasn’t limited to paper currency; it extended to the gold market as well. The price of the Emami coin reached 237 million tomans, amidst a continuing wave of inflation. This record high reflects the magnitude of the accumulated economic and political pressures. The effects of foreign exchange restrictions and growing demand pressures in domestic markets are also evident, widening the already significant gap between official exchange rates and those traded on the open market.

Market indicators suggest that the stablecoin Tether is trading near the same levels as the US dollar (between 223,000 and 225,000 tomans). With the continued volatility and instability in Iran’s business environment, exchange rates remain subject to rapid fluctuations linked to current political and economic factors. This exacerbates the cost of living and import challenges in the country.
