Hartford HealthCare to invest $1 billion, anchored by patient tower

The investment is part of a broader strategy to for Hartford Hospital to be a destination for research, teaching, innovation and clinical discovery, CEO says.

Hartford HealthCare is investing $1 billion over the next decade in projects that include a $950 million patient and surgical tower at Hartford Hospital, according to the Hartford Courant.

Plans also include a redesigned front entrance to the hospital, a new parking garage, restaurant and conference center that can accommodate up to 500 people.

“So this is all part of that broader strategy to really have Hartford Hospital be magnetic, to be a destination for research, teaching, innovation, clinical discovery,” said Jeffrey A. Flaks, president and CEO of Hartford HealthCare. “And it just adds another piece of the puzzle that we need to be able to elevate and be competitive with anyone across the country to host meetings of this scale. So we’re very excited about that.”

Construction on the tower is expected to begin next year, the report said.

Fifteen buildings in the campus are included in renovations, according to a video by Hartford HealthCare. An above ground concourse will connect the buildings.

There will be a new arrival center, light-filled lobby, an improved ER to ease overcrowding, a healing garden and 250 patient rooms that are private smart rooms, Hartford HealthCare said.

“So this is a massive investment in the future of Hartford Hospital,” said Flaks, according to the Hartford Courant. “And this building will be the most advanced, most sophisticated hospital building anywhere in the country.”

Hartford HealthCare is the parent organization of Hartford Hospital and six other acute care hospitals.
